Arlene Samuelson, ASID

I have been in the Interior Design industry for 30 years; 24 years as the owner of A.M.S. INTERIORS. I have international, corporate, small business, new and remodeled home projects that make up my portfolio. In College, I received a travel abroad scholarship to engage with the architecture students in Belgium for 4 weeks during my university studies. I graduated from The University of Kansas in 1990 with a BFA degree in Interior Design which uniquely included a 4th year thesis study with the school of Architecture.

My career started in Wichita, Kansas with an international designer John Coultis of Coultis and Associates. John studied at Parsons School of Design in New York in the 1950’s. During my 6 year tenure, I was his only designer on staff. While there, my work included vacation homes in Sea Island Georgia, Scottsdale, Arizona, and Mackinaw Island, Michigan. Banks, foundations, private plane interiors, and the Wichita Boathouse were all local projects in Kansas. I was also very involved in a 5 year design contract with F&M Banks in Tulsa Oklahoma; remodeling three branches and one design-build branch which included many high end and custom design applications requiring me to travel to design centers in Los Angeles, New York, and Dallas frequently. I also had the very rare treat of being involved in the decoration of a US Embassy in Rabat, Morocco. During my employment at Coultis, I was exposed to and apprenticed under custom furniture craftsmen, upholsterers, metal-smiths, welders, textile and painting artists, electricians, architects, custom rug manufacturers, communications with, and including a visit with a fabric manufacturer in Germany.

I earned my American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) Professional status in 1992. This professional status is only given to a designer who qualifies through NCIDQ(National Council of Interior Designers Qualification) which requires a degree in Interior Design, minimum 2 years work experience, and passing the rigorous and varied tests in design and drawing abilities, building codes, construction methods, and materials and processes.
